OYASUMI PUNPUN

Never thought I'd be writing an Ian Stinkpiece about this manga in particular, but here we are. SPOILER WARNING— don't read any further if you want to experience it for yourself.

TRIGGER WARNING: MENTIONS OF EYE TRAUMA AND SEXUAL ASSAULT.

Oyasumi Punpun, or in its English translation, Goodnight Punpun, is a coming of age manga series by Inio Asano. Bold in its message and general idea, it dares to ask a question— what if the dude who we watch grow up through the span of years turns into a huge piece of shit?

Alright, I'll be honest. I only read the manga which I am speaking of because I thought it was horror— I saw a photo of Punpun in his "fucked up demon looking fellow" form and figured it would be a good horror manga. I'm sure you could imagine my surprise when I saw a goofy little bird–condom thing which was the main character; however, I pushed through and somehow read it all.

What is in the water in the city which everyone lives? Everyone is mentally ill, perpetually in peril, and too painfully real for characters from a series where the main character is depicted as a goddamn bird for a good half of it.

Personally, I find it quite entertaining to scrutinize Punpun's decisionmaking skills. When Aiko stabbed him in the eye with a fork, I just sat there for a while wondering why he goaded her into pushing the utensil deeper— or when he beat the fuck out of a dude outside a convenience store for littering. Lighten up, man.

No, I won't go into Punpun repeatedly pressuring Aiko into sex, or him flat out raping her at one point. That's just Punpun being a huge fucking freak.

The art in this manga is fantastic, I'll be real. Punpun could be crying about Aiko not loving him or something, and I'd just be staring at the detailwork of a tree he's standing next to. Hell, the background of this site is FROM Oyasumi Punpun. Even if you don't like the "coming of age" genre, I'd recommend you skim through the pages just to look at the art.

Anyway, that's about all I can think of for now. This was a complete trainwreck of subjects, but I think that's how you'll know all this was coming from the heart.
